One late night in 1995, a Deaf community leader, Marty Jansen woke up in bed, clutching his chest. He was having a heart attack. His wife Dianne, who is severely hard of hearing, called 911 via a TTY (a telecommunications device for the deaf), but the 911 center kept hanging up on them.

As a working interpreter for DHHS and as someone who sees all of the support DHHS provides firsthand I strongly recommend & support this agency. When members of the Deaf/HH community are in need, DHHS steps up to do what they can (if they are aware of the need). DHHS provides interpreters (24/7), ASL classes (at numerous locations), community education and has a multitude of devices & equipment & resources for the community. The staff is caring and works nonstop. & thanks to DHHS and the staff.
